How to Apply DTF Transfers Step by Step

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather your supplies:

  • Your DTF transfer (shop our Transfers collection)
  • A heat press (clamshell or swing-away)
  • The garment or substrate you're pressing onto
  • A Teflon sheet or parchment paper
  • A lint roller

Step 1: Pre-Press Your Garment

Pre-pressing removes moisture and wrinkles, which are the #1 cause of poor adhesion. Place your garment on the heat press and press for 3–5 seconds at 320°F (160°C) with medium pressure. Let it cool for a few seconds before moving on.

Step 2: Position Your Transfer

Place your DTF transfer film-side up on the garment exactly where you want it. Use a ruler or alignment guide if you need precise placement. Smooth it down gently — no bubbles or lifted edges.

Step 3: Heat Press Settings

DTF transfers work best with these settings (adjust slightly for your specific press):

  • Temperature: 300–320°F (149–160°C)
  • Time: 10–15 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium-firm (about 40–60 PSI)

Cover the transfer with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper to protect both the transfer and your press platen.

Step 4: Press and Peel

Close the heat press and apply pressure for the full time. When the timer goes off, open the press and peel the film immediately while hot (hot peel) — pull slowly and at a low angle. If your transfer is a cold-peel type, wait 10–15 seconds before peeling.

Not sure which type you have? Check your order details or the product listing in our Transfers collection.

Step 5: Final Press (Optional but Recommended)

For extra durability and a softer feel, do a final press: cover the design with parchment paper and press for 5 seconds. This helps the ink bond fully and reduces any sheen from the adhesive powder.

Step 6: Let It Cool and Cure

Allow the garment to cool completely before folding or wearing. For best wash durability, wait 24 hours before the first wash. Turn the garment inside out and wash cold.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Transfer not sticking: Increase temperature or pressure slightly, or pre-press longer.
  • Cracking after wash: You may have under-pressed — try a longer press time.
  • Ghosting or blurry edges: The garment or transfer shifted during pressing. Use heat-resistant tape to hold the transfer in place.
  • Film won't peel cleanly: Make sure you're peeling at the correct temperature for your transfer type.
