How to Care for Garments with DTF Transfers

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are known for their durability — when applied correctly and cared for properly, they can last 50 or more washes without cracking, peeling, or fading. Here's how to get the longest life out of your DTF-printed garments.

Washing DTF Transfers

Do:

  • Turn the garment inside out before washing. This protects the print from friction against other clothes and the drum of the washer.
  • Wash in cold water (30°C / 86°F or below). Hot water breaks down the adhesive bond over time.
  • Use a gentle cycle. Less agitation = less wear on the print.
  • Use a mild detergent. Avoid detergents with bleach, optical brighteners, or fabric softeners — these can degrade the ink and adhesive.

Don't:

  • ❌ Don't use bleach or bleach-based stain removers on or near the print.
  • ❌ Don't wash in hot water.
  • ❌ Don't use fabric softener — it coats the fibers and can cause the transfer to lift at the edges over time.
  • ❌ Don't scrub the print directly when treating stains. Dab gently from the inside of the garment instead.

Drying DTF Transfers

Do:

  • Air dry when possible. Hang the garment or lay it flat to dry. This is the gentlest option and extends print life the most.
  • Use low heat in the dryer if you need to machine dry. Most DTF prints handle low-heat tumble drying fine.

Don't:

  • ❌ Don't use high heat in the dryer. Repeated high-heat cycles can cause the print to crack or peel prematurely.
  • ❌ Don't iron directly on the print. If you need to iron the garment, turn it inside out and iron on the reverse side, or use a pressing cloth over the design.

Storing DTF-Printed Garments

  • Store folded or hung in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure can fade any print over time.
  • Avoid storing in plastic bags for long periods — moisture can build up and affect the print.

First Wash After Pressing

If you've just pressed a DTF transfer yourself, wait at least 24 hours before the first wash. This gives the adhesive time to fully cure and bond to the fabric fibers, which significantly improves long-term durability.
