How to Prepare Artwork for DTF Transfers (File Setup Guide)

The quality of your DTF transfer starts with your artwork file. Even the best printer can't fix a low-resolution or incorrectly set up file. Follow this guide to make sure your designs come out sharp, vibrant, and exactly as intended.

Accepted File Formats

  • PNG — Best choice. Supports transparent backgrounds, which is essential for DTF. Use this whenever possible.
  • PDF — Great for vector-based artwork. Preserves sharp edges at any size.
  • SVG — Ideal for vector logos and illustrations.
  • PSD / AI — Accepted by most suppliers if you need to send layered files.
  • JPG — Avoid if possible. JPGs have a white background and use lossy compression that can soften edges.

Resolution: Always 300 DPI Minimum

DTF transfers are printed at high resolution. If your file is low-res, the print will look pixelated or blurry — and there's no fixing it after the fact.

  • Minimum: 300 DPI at the final print size
  • Recommended: 300–600 DPI
  • Vector files (PDF, SVG, AI): Resolution-independent — always sharp at any size

Tip: Don't upscale a low-res image to meet the DPI requirement. Enlarging a 72 DPI web image to 300 DPI just makes a larger blurry image. Start with a high-res source file.

Color Mode: RGB (Not CMYK)

DTF printers use RGB color profiles. If you submit a CMYK file, colors may shift when converted. Always set your document to RGB color mode before exporting.

In Photoshop: Image → Mode → RGB Color
In Illustrator: File → Document Color Mode → RGB

Transparent Background

Your design should have a transparent background (checkerboard pattern in Photoshop), not a white or colored background. DTF transfers print white ink underneath the design to make colors pop on dark fabrics — but only where your actual artwork is. A white background in your file will print as a white rectangle around your design.

To check: open your PNG in Photoshop or a free tool like remove.bg and confirm the background is transparent.

Sizing Your Design

Set your artwork to the exact size you want it printed at 300 DPI. Common sizes:

  • Left chest logo: 3.5" – 4" wide
  • Full front: 11–12" wide
  • Back print: 11–13" wide
  • Sleeve: 3–4" wide
  • Hat patch: 2–3" wide

If you're building a gang sheet, size each design individually before uploading to the Gang Sheet Auto Builder.

Bleed and Safe Zone

  • Leave at least 0.125" (3mm) of buffer around the edges of your design — don't crop artwork right to the edge of the canvas.
  • Keep important elements (text, faces, logos) at least 0.25" from the edge of the design area.

Text and Fine Details

  • Minimum recommended text size: 6pt or larger for clean readability.
  • Very thin lines (under 0.5pt stroke) may not print cleanly — thicken them up if possible.
  • Outline your fonts before saving (convert text to outlines/paths) to avoid font substitution issues.
